In Finland, so often looked to as a beacon of educational reform, students do not start formal schooling until seven years of age and are assigned virtually no homework.
Today's Students have too much Homework. As the areas of science, arts and social sciences got more and more defined and divided into particular fields, so did the subjects of students. Increase in the number of subjects means an increase in the homework assignments of the students.
Homework is an important part of being successful inside and outside of the classroom, but too much of it can actually have the opposite effect. Students who spend too much time on homework are not always able to meet other needs, like being physically and socially active.
So all that homework becomes a waste because you have already completed it at school. You can also easily get distracted. Homework takes away revision time for tests and that can affect the test.
I'm a freshman in college taking 14 credits with 4 classes. I don't see how the hell people have so much time for having fun in clubs and sports and friends and parties. I never have any time. There's always the idea that there is homework I need to be doing. I always feel like I'm behind and should be working ahead to not do them last minute.
Homework can affect both students’ physical and mental health. According to a study by Stanford University, 56 per cent of students considered homework a primary source of stress. Too much homework can result in lack of sleep, headaches, exhaustion and weight loss.
When homework stacks up many people must choose between sleep or homework. Many students also get depressed by the fact that they must face so much homework. A large number of students also skip out on meals causing some major problems as well. Many students said their homework burden led to sleep deprivation and other health problems.
